He began training in ITF Taekwon-do in the sixth grade. He would be involved in street fights and at his school during his childhood. So, to prevent Yan from any harm, his family would often move to prevent his fighting. His older brother trained in boxing in their hometown. Yan wanted to join and train with his brother. However, his brother refused. So, Yan would sneak into the training area to learn boxing.
