Before joining the South Korean Navy, Jung trained in kickboxing, judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After joining the Navy, he started training in Taekwondo.

In 2007, he won two tournaments. In June, he won a sambo tournament, and in December, he won the Lightweight division of the Pancrase Korea Neo-Blood Tournament.
